چکیده

Introduction Rudolf Kaaks originally trained at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and is currently Professor of Cancer Epidemiology and head of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). He is also one of the principal investigators of the European Investigation on Nutrition and Cancer (EPIC). His research focus is on metabolic and endocrine pathways that may provide a link between lifestyle, nutritional energy balance and cancer risk, and he has conducted various epidemiologic studies in prospective cohorts to examine cancer risks in relation to blood levels of endogenous hormones, growth factors, inflammation factors and other metabolic factors. Furthermore, he has a strong interest in linking findings from epidemiologic studies on energy balance and cancer with those from basic physiology, clinical sciences and molecular biology.

Body fatness as a cause of cancer: epidemiologic clues to biologic mechanisms.

Carrying excess body fat is a leading cause of cancer. Epidemiologic evidence gives strong clues about the mechanisms that link excess adiposity to risk for several cancer sites. For postmenopausal breast cancer and endometrial cancer, the hyper-estrogenic state that is induced by excess body fatness is the likely cause. For esophageal cancer and gallbladder cancer, chronic local inflammation i...

Overweight, obesity, oxidative stress and the risk of breast cancer.

There is growing scientific evidence linking excess body weight to breast cancer risk. However, there is no common consensus on this relation due partly to methodologies used, populations studied and the cancer subtype. We report here a summary of the present state of knowledge on the role of overweight and obesity in pathogenesis of breast cancer and possible mechanisms through which excess bo...

Epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity as cause of cancer.

According to World Health Organisation estimates 1.1 billion people were overweight or obese worldwide in the year 2000 with the prevalence rapidly increasing. Compelling evidence suggests that excess body weight is a risk factor for several cancer types including cancer of the colon, breast, endometrium, kidney, oesophagus, as well as possibly additional sites. According to previous meta-analy...
